Jack Micheals and Ben Gomori are Filthy & Wrong, there’s not doubt about that! We caught up with these too likely lads in their favourite dwelling place to chat about their exclusive residency at the brand new club brand krowdkontrol on April 22nd… durrrrty!
Let’s take it from the top then — who’s Filthy and who’s Wrong? And where did the name come from?
Ben: Ha ha everyone always asks this! The answer is we are both filthy and we are both wrong. Collectively we are filthy and wrong — we both have our moments of exhibiting both qualities!
Jack: I think the name came from when we were practising for our first gig… trying to describe the sound we were going for. After the name ‘The Divorce Force’ became copyrighted by krowdkontrol promoter JC, we had go with another name! Filthy & Wrong just seemed to fit so well.
What’s the filthiest and wrongest thing you’ve ever done?
Ben: Probably pulling Jack when I first met him ‘cos I thought he was a bird!
Jack: Ha ha yeah the hair can confuse people a bit sometimes… other than that, anyone who saw me at Kissdafunk in Leeds the other week can probably verify that I was being a bit wrong that night!
Ben: I must say I felt pretty filthy doing the photoshoot for this interview too… besides having to contend with looking at Jack’s sexy mullet, we were surrounded by numerous blokes going into whorehouses, ginger tramps, dodgy pimp/crackdealers and the like. But hey, that’s Soho for you! Gotta love a bit of grime eh!
You both have diverse DJ backgrounds and are well known for playing at the harder end of the dance music spectrum. What was your decision to move into the more house/electro side of things?
Ben: OK let’s get this straight for once and all! I absolutely love all styles of music, and I truly mean that. Since I started DJing and I was playing both house and trance, I’ve always loved playing different styles of music and I’ve never had any prejudice against any one style. I still play hard stuff, but unfortunately haven’t been getting many gigs on that front recently. I’ve haven’t had enough time to push myself and the whole thing is self-perpetuating — if you are playing house/electro gigs all the time, people see you playing that and book you for that, so I just haven’t had any exposure in the hard scene for a while. It’s something I’m planning on working on though!
I hope I can continue playing all the styles of music I love. It saddens me that some people can be very prejudiced about things like this, and I hope I can break the mould a little and just stay true to what I love — and do it all well!
Jack: Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good stomp to a bit of hard dance but at the moment the stuff that’s really firing me up is the house/electro/tech-house side of things. The whole scene is still relatively fresh and unexplored for me, so I’m really enjoying getting into it and discovering so much new music. You have to just go with the flow and play what you want to play, as Ben said — and right now that’s where I’m at! No diss to hard dance at all, but at the moment this is what I’m really loving playing. I’ll still challenge any of you fuckers to a hard dance dance-off — and I’ll win!
Ben: Yeh I wouldn’t challenge him if I were you — you’ll probably explode trying to keep up with him!
OK so from all the genres you are into, who is really doing it for you right now (DJs/producers)?
Ben & Jack: Switch!! AKA one half of Solid Groove. We both absolutely love their sound — chunky, full of phat grooves, twisted little melodies and samples. it’s just so different to anything we’ve heard before. So innovative and well produced. Occasionally they go a little bit too weird but on the most part it’s just phat-arse dancefloor music.
Jack: I’m loving anything by Daniel Taylor (other half of Solid Groove), Nick & Danny Chatelain and Mike Monday. DJ wise the Cheshire Catz, Big Daddy, Tim Sheridan, Mike Monday…
Ben: God where to start… King Unique kill it every time, King Roc, Jesse Rose, Marco V’s electro stuff has been immense. On a hard tip Chris Hoff still impresses. TC is smashing it drum ‘n’ bass style. What about DJs? Erm people who have blown me away have been Nathan Coles (tech-house legend), Peshay (drum ‘n’ bass legend), DJ Skully (UK DMC Scratch Champion — hip-hop), Mike Monday….
You’ve been made residents at krowdkontrol which launches at Hidden on April 22nd… how did this come about?
Ben: It all started when krowdkontrol promoter JC was still co-promoting Yes! at Hidden. He asked me to play after I had sent him my Th!s Sh!t !s Bananas demo, and he asked me who I wanted to do a back-to-back with. I’d just seen Jack smack it at Summit and was loving his similar taste in tunes and unbridled enthusiasm, so I suggested him. Lo and behold history was made!
Jack: We hooked up for some practise and realised our styles meshed really well and so thought it might be a good idea to do a back-to-back on a regular basis. After our gig at Yes! JC told us he was starting up a new night and he wanted to make us residents!
Ben: He demanded mouth sex from both of us in exchange for this true honour, but we told him to get stuffed and sent him packing with a copy of Razzle and a tub of hand lotion.
Great! Who are you looking forward to seeing play on the night?
Jack: Marc Hasler and DJP for sure. They are two of Ben’s mates originally and are fellow residents with us. They also played at Yes! and are truly awesome — mixing up anything from uplifting house to chunky electro to smashing breaks, all with some wicked scratching and FX manipulation. True talents! Also Ilana Belsky — she’s a good friend and a wicked DJ too.
Ben: Yeah looking forward to seeing her play — heard so much about her but never actually seen her play. Top girl! Marc and DJP seriously deserve your attention too, they are awesome. Defo up for checking out this live band too… and we are both very excited about seeing the disgustingly talented Max Cooper play too! He’s so fucking good!
Will you be fighting back the crowd or getting right in there?!
Ben: Well we’ll probably have to fight off our big gay following (aka Gordon Darley), but after that we’ll be getting proper stuck into the entertainment! Unfortunately my finals begin the Friday after this event so I will have to behave myself. Boo!
Jack: Ha ha none of that for me… no exams round my way so I’m going to get on it I guess!
What’s this about the secret live band? Can you give us any hint?
Ben: Think — what links the A-Team and Gorillaz?
NB: If you’re not in love with the music will you please f*ck off!
